DESCRIPTION / SYNOPSIS:
A respected electrical engineering firm specialising in substation control and communication systems is seeking a Control Installation Technician. This site-focused role involves the installation, termination, and testing of control and fibre optic systems across high-voltage substations (11kV–400kV). If you are experienced in panel wiring, fibre handling, and have a quality-first mindset, this is your opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge power infrastructure projects across South Africa and beyond.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Technical diploma or trade certification in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Telecommunications
- 3–5 years’ experience in substation or industrial control installations
- Proven experience with fibre optic cabling, splicing (fusion/mechanical), and testing (OTDR, light source)
- Proficiency in control panel installation and wiring techniques
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to site locations
- Electrical or fibre optic training certifications (FOA, BICSI, or vendor-specific) preferred
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Install control panels, SCADA RTUs, marshalling kiosks, and communication equipment
- Route, terminate, and label multicore control cables and fibre optic cables
- Interpret electrical diagrams, fibre layouts, and termination schedules
- Perform fibre splicing and validate installations using OTDR and power meter tests
- Conduct continuity and insulation resistance tests for control cables
- Assist with SCADA and IED communication interface testing
- Maintain neat cable management and accurate as-built documentation
- Support commissioning teams with verification and final handover procedures
- Adhere to safety protocols and industry best practices on site
