Commissioning Engineer

DESCRIPTION / SYNOPSIS:
A leading electrical engineering firm specialising in high-voltage power infrastructure and renewable energy projects is seeking a Substation Commissioning Engineer. In this site-based role, you’ll be responsible for commissioning HV substations from 11kV to 400kV, ensuring all systems are tested and functional before final handover. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or Diploma with relevant experience)
- 5–10 years of substation commissioning experience (11kV–400kV)
- Experience with major OEM equipment: SEL, Hitachi, GE, Siemens
- Deep understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, IEC61850
- Familiarity with testing equipment (e.g., OMICRON, Doble, Megger)
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively (domestic & international)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and execute commissioning of HV substations, including transformers, switchgear, protection relays, and SCADA systems
- Interpret design schematics and verify equipment installations
- Perform functional testing, secondary injection, and end-to-end protection tests
- Configure and troubleshoot IEC61850 communications between IEDs from various OEMs
- Redline and update drawings to reflect site changes during commissioning
- Coordinate with internal teams, OEMs, and utilities to ensure safe and timely project delivery
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and client specifications
- Prepare reports, commissioning documentation, and handover packages
- Supervise installation and provide client training on equipment functionality

- Strong troubleshooting and decision-making ability
- Excellent communication and stakeholder coordination skills
- Self-driven, detail-oriented, and highly organised
- Able to work under pressure and in remote, high-voltage environments
- Willingness to travel frequently and work extended hours during project phases
